I am a New York-based designer and currently an experience director at Learnvest, a Northwestern Mutual company. There, I build and lead teams of designers who are spearheading the digital transformation for the parent company. This is happening through new digital platforms, service design, and organizational change.
I’ve co-founded and led design for a number of companies and projects including Macromicro, Classroom Salon, Skale, and The Interactive News. At Macromicro, our team received the SAP Pinnacle Award for application development in 2016 and was named one of the most innovative startups in Europe at HR Tech 2013.
For over ten years, I taught design and led research initiatives at Carnegie Mellon University where I am an alumnus of the School of Design and Department of English. From 2009 to 2016, I was faculty in the School of Design and Department of Information Systems and in 2017 served as adjunct faculty at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute.
For much of my time at Carnegie Mellon, I was based in Doha, Qatar heading an undergraduate track that blended design, architecture, the humanities, and technology at the university’s groundbreaking Middle East campus. While there, I co-founded the Interaction Design Association’s first chapter in the region, IxDA Doha.
As a professor, I taught studio courses, research courses, executive education, and design history and theory rooted in the context of systems and human experience. My research initiatives received grant funding from Google, The National Science Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Heinz Endowments, Innovation Works, and Qatar Foundation.
I come from the generation of designers that was influenced by the Macintosh, Hypercard, Steve Jobs, and Jonathan Ive. I was one of the early bloggers, exploring in the late ‘90s what became known as interaction design. I combined those interests with information design and rhetoric and studied under Buchanan, Boyarski, Evenson, Kaufer, and others at Carnegie Mellon.
Today, in additional to my professional practice, I co-lead IxDA New York City which serves as a meeting point for professionals who share design’s core interest in shaping culture in positive ways.
On the side I like to illustrate maps, paint landscapes, and make photos. I’m from New York’s Hudson Valley and live in Cold Spring.
